Of Icelandic Bridles...
In asking about Icelandic bridles, I really like how they do
it. Their bridles generally are elementally direct. Just one essential
adjusting buckle at the top with no extra pieces or adjusters
to wear or break. No extra cheek pieces and no brow bands; neither
of which are really needed if you take a moment to adjust the
one buckle at the top of the bridle over the horse’s pole, as
you tack up a horse.
The bridles are usually two pieces of leather with an adjusting
buckle in the middle which would be over the pole of the horse
and and with fittings also at the ends to hold a bit. The dropped
nose band that is commonly used in Iceland has several smaller
pieces but it is still essential. Getting the length of the piece
that goes over across the nose bone of the horse is the only crucial
part of the dropped nose band.
Their bridles boil down to be simple and direct to the task.
The design comes from rancher or farmer-like people. From real
people who pragmatically design and build things to do tasks at
hand which skip frill that does not really have much to do with
the work at hand.
Icelandic tack reflects a utility from where it is used. Their
bridles reflect this in the same way that the Icelandic saddles
do. These are from real horse people that use and ride horses!
