Prairie Garden Farm is located in the rolling hills of southeast
Iowa. Doug and Jennifer Hamilton have been involved with Icelandics
since 1985. Icelandics fra Slettunni, their farm registry name,
translates as "Icelandics from the Prairie".
At Prairie Garden Farm you can choose from a variety of well-trained
pleasure horses and young stock, both imported and domestically
bred. Prairie Garden Farm has standing at stud the evaluated 1st
class stallion, Sorli fra Bulandi, a proven sire from excellent
performance bloodlines.
The Hamiltons have been long-time horse people. They actively
ride and train their horses. Prior to coming into Icelandic horses
they had Morgans, standardbreds, Pasos, and Belgians using them
as saddle, draft and driving horses. Since 1985, they have been
active in promoting and presenting the Icelandic horse throughout
the Midwest.
At home, Doug and Jennifer both teach riding and take people
trail-riding on Icelandics. They have been teaching riding and
horsemanship since 1988.
As they continue to learn about Icelandic horses, their own preference
has drawn them to horses who combine a friendly, willing-to-work
disposition and Icelandics with natural movement in all five gaits.
For them, this combination of superb temperament and balanced
gait distribution represents the integrity of the Icelandic breed.
Doug points out, "Good temperament is not unique to Icelandic
horses. But good temperament with clear gait distribution, then
there is value! Whether as four or five gaited horses, combined
with a wide range of experience, training and abilities, then
there is value!"
The Hamiltons now go to Iceland regularly to personally pick
out horses they feel will be suitable for the American pleasure
rider. If you have something particular in mind, they can help
you find it in Iceland through their always growing circle of
reliable contacts in Iceland.
The Hamiltons are first and foremost pleasure riders. Finding
creative ways to use and share their horses is a priority with
them. In breed-demonstrations, parades, historical re-enactments,
or just riding their horses into town for coffee, the Hamiltons
are always ready to share the joys of owning Icelandics. They
invite you to call to make an appointment to come and visit.
